2nd workshop of the openRISE project - A further step towards innovation

On May 7 and 8, 2024, the second workshop of the EU-funded openRISE project took place. The project team gathered to advance to the next critical phase of the project.

An Intensive and Productive Workshop

The technical expertise of the workshop was evident in the subsequent sessions. A key focus was on LTE-M and NB-IoT, two specialized cellular technologies particularly well-suited for the Internet of Things.

An important topic was the OpenWRT operating system, a Linux derivative. It offers a flexible and customizable platform for our measurement devices. Additionally, we deepened our understanding of hardware detection in Linux, which is crucial for correctly integrating the planned measurement devices. Special attention was given to antenna specifications, as these are critical for the functionality of the measurement devices. Precise antenna specifications are essential to ensure that the devices can correctly receive and process radio signals without interfering with each other.

Another highlight was the presentation on Timing Advance in LTE. This technology helps determine the distance between a cellular mast and a device, which is very useful for locating cellular masts. The software concept was presented at the end, so initial work on the software can now begin.

The presentations from the workshop, as well as the developed software architecture, are available on the GitLab server. Access can be requested if interested.

The lively discussions on software features and antenna specifications, as well as the work packages and responsibilities, created clarity and a solid foundation for further collaboration.

A Clear Plan for the Future

Participants left the meeting with a clear plan and much anticipation for the coming months. The success of the workshop brings us a significant step closer to our goal of equipping all vehicles of the criminal investigation services in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with modern measurement devices. These devices will revolutionize crime scene work by enabling automated cell tower determinations.
